Anime Limited and U.S. distributor GKIDS have acquired global rights (excluding Asia and EMEA) to Naoko Yamada and Science SARU’s upcoming coming-of-age anime movie THE COLORS WITHIN (KIMINOIRO), which will have its world premiere In Competition at the Annecy International Film Festival this June, ahead of a theatrical release this winter.

Anime Limited have obtained rights to the UK, Ireland, and all of Europe – with their parent company PLAION PICTURES distributing in German and Italian speaking territories. GKIDS have acquired the film for North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand. The sales agent Charades will manage sales for the film in the rest of Europe, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.

The film will have its world premiere In Competition at this year’s Annecy International Film Festival in June, before being released theatrically this winter.

THE COLORS WITHIN is helmed by the acclaimed director Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice, Liz and the Bluebird) and animated by Science SARU (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Inu-Oh), marking their first feature film collaboration, following the television anime The Heike Story and short film The Garden of Remembrance. The film also features Yamada’s long-time collaborator screenwriter Reiko Yoshida (A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden), with a score by Kensuke Ushio (DEVILMAN crybaby, Chainsaw Man).

Anime Limited and GKIDS describe the film as follows:

Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colors’?

THE COLORS WITHIN is releasing theatrically in Japan from 30th August.
