JJK Breaks Major Record at Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024

Jujutsu Kaisen broke a major record at the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, previously held by My Hero Academia.

Crunchyroll has unveiled its winners at the 2024 edition of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, which saw Jujutsu Kaisen win big this year. The popular series registered 11 wins in total, breaking My Hero Academia‘s record of eight wins from the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2018. Among Jujutsu Kaisen‘s biggest prizes were Anime of the Year, Best Action and Best Director, the latter awarded to Shota Goshozono. This year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards was the biggest in its history. Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini said in a press release, “Anime fans from around the world have spoken and collectively, they cast more votes than in the history of the Anime Awards to crown the 2024 winners. Anime is a powerful force, driving pop culture and connecting global fans and it is a privilege to celebrate and honor this dynamic artform.” 34 million votes were cast this year — nearly double the 18 million from 2023, showcasing anime’s worldwide appeal.

In attendance were massive anime industry figures such as Attack on Titan composers Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, Vinland Saga author Makoto Yukimura, Japanese pop duo YOASOBI (Oshi no Ko‘s “Idol”) and many more. Sony Music Solutions, part of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., supported Crunchyroll in executing the event.

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s stake in Anime of the Year was a strong one, coming off the back of Parrott Analytics’ Most In-Demand TV Show in the World, However, managing to break My Hero Academia‘s record was no mean feat, with the series credited by the CEO of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and My Hero Academia distributor Toho as the “turning point” in the fight for legal anime streaming and the future success of anime films at the box office. Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen‘s MAPPA was also well-represented at the event. While Vinland Saga didn’t receive any awards, Chainsaw Man did manage to convert its record 25 nominations into six wins, including Best New Series.

The record-breaking Jujutsu Kaisen anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, which describes the series: “Yuji Itadori eats a cursed finger to save a classmate, and now Ryomen Sukuna, a powerfully evil sorcerer known as the King of Curses, lives in Itadori’s soul. Curses are supernatural terrors created from negative human emotions. This cursed energy can be used as a power source by jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits alike. Guided by the jujutsu sorcerers, Yuji Itadori joins Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses. Mentored by his teacher Satoru Gojo, Itadori befriends Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, both first-year students.”

A boy swallows a cursed talisman – the finger of a demon – and becomes cursed himself. He enters a shaman’s school to be able to locate the demon’s other body parts and thus exorcise himself.
