The Plot of the Godzilla-Inspired Kaiju No. 8
Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 manga launched for free on the Shonen Jump+ app in July 2020. As its title suggests, the series’ premise will ring nostalgic to die-hard Godzilla fans. 32-year-old Kafta Hibino inhabits a world where destructive monsters called “kaiju” regularly wreak havoc on the human world. A powerful military organization called the Defense Corps is frequently called upon to deal with the beasts, leaving the “sweepers” the unglamorous task of dealing with the remains. Kafka, who longs to join the Defense Corps, is eventually attacked by a parasitic kaiju, granting him the ability to transform into a powerful humanoid monster. With his newfound powers, Kafka finally has the opportunity to keep his promise to childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, and fight by her side as an official Corps member.
Shigeyuki Miya (Supernatural: The Anime Series) and Tomomi Kamiya (Gintama) teamed up to direct the Kaiju No. 8 at Production I.G. Ichiro Okouchi, co-creator of the iconic sci-fi franchise Code Geass, wrote the series’ screenplay. Tetsuyo Nishio (Naruto, Stand Alone Complex) served as chief animation director and character designer. Masaya Fukunishi (The First Slam Dunk) and Asami Seto (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury) portray Kafka and Mina, respectively. Wataru Kato (The Legendary Hero Is Dead) is cast as Kafka’s close friend and ally, Reno Ichikawa.

Shawn Gann (Buddy Daddies, The Apothecary Diaries) is overseeing the English production as ADR director.
Kaiju No. 8 is set to premiere on April 13, with new episodes scheduled to debut every following Saturday. After the live broadcast, the series, along with its multiple dubbed versions, will be available to stream starting at 8:30 a.m. (PDT).
