This Wednesday Sony has set the date of March 20, 2026 as the premiere day of Street Fighter. The movie of Legendaryis being developed and produced jointly with the Japanese video game distributor Capcom.

Legendary acquired the film and television rights to the popular video game series in 2023. Since its launch in 1987, Street Fighter has sold more than 49 million units worldwide, making it one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time.

It is not the first time that “Street Fighter” comes to the big screen. Universal put together an adaptation of the same name in 1994starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia. In 2009, 20th Century Fox premiered “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li“, with Kristin Kreuk. Both projects were critical and commercial failures.

While video game adaptations used to be synonymous with box office failures, recent years have seen a succession of hits in the genre, including “Sonic the Hedgehog” and its 2022 sequel, Tom Holland’s “Uncharted,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and the “Super Mario Bros. Movie.” In the world of television, adaptations of “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” have also proven popular. This is probably why the idea of making this film is being revived.

Sony Pictures will distribute the film internationally. No details are known about the plot for now, nor is its production team (after the retirement of its directors a few months ago). It is worth mentioning that the release date of the film is subject to change.
