This show does a really great job at having you feel emotionally conflicted as to which girl is your favorite. Unless its Mami because we all hate her. But for example this episode has opened my eyes and made me realize that if Sumi was written a little better and given a little more Balls so to speak she really would be an unstoppable character.
The show opens up with Kazuya doing some research trying to see What he could possibly do to help Chizuru out. When he hears something hit his balcony door window. This shocked him just as much as it did me because I immediately knew that it was Chizuru throwing something at his window this time rather than the other way around. He goes outside and Chizuru is like look I don’t have much time so I will make this quick. Sumi wants you to help her practice again, meaning for her rental girlfriend job. She gives him a time and asks if that’s ok, the meetup time was 10 Am which he says that is early. But it would seem as though Sumi has some sort of schedule planned out and that 11:30 was very important and something Kazuya couldn’t miss. As Chizuru is walking back inside Kazuya asks her if she is ok, Like I said in the last episode it would seem that Chizuru in her head is content with knowing what is to come. She knows that she has done all she could do. She even says only fools look back on the past with regret. Then she turns the tables on Kazuya and asks him if things are ok with Ruka. She even brings it up again that they started acting weird at the party. He just says managing I guess, She says really? Good to hear, have fun. then closes her door.
Kazuya shows up to the rental date with Sumi and notices that she is wearing a schoolgirl outfit! He’s like WHATTT!!!
He greets Sumi and she points in a direction and starts heading that way. Kazuya is really confused with this uniform that she is wearing he starts to beat around the bush about it trying to figure out why she wore one, he says Chizuru didn’t tell me anything about a uniform so I dressed normally. Finally after some time he asks do you wear uniforms often? She pulls out her phone and starts typing, the text says, “I just thought you liked school uniforms Kazuya.” He’s like what! Me! Then thinks about what could have given her that idea. Then it hits him and he asks if she saw him and Chizuru at the park on their rental date. This gets confirmed. They both wind up getting embarrassed in this moment, Kazuya because he was seen on a rental date with Chizuru and Sumi because she assumed he liked school uniforms which he does and decided to wear one, in an attempt to try and be cute.
He realizes that they are at Aqua World which is like an aquarium which is actually a perfect date to take Kazuya on seeing as he likes fish so much. He wonders if Chizuru told Sumi that he likes fish or if this is all just a coincidence. She actually speaks right here one of a handful of times in this episode which is kind of nice and says I wanted to guide you today. They get inside and she is showing him cool things like this rad pirate ship ride and he notices that she is just sitting on the floor, he asks if she is ok he’s like yeah so he sits down beside her and a penguin comes out and pulls on a string revealing a scroll that just says penguin. :right her he says so she knew about this” meaning she probably has already been here or came here and did a tour by herself to plan all of this out. That will come back into play later.
He thinks in his head that her lack of communication skills makes it hard to predict what she is doing or wants to do. She then takes him on a merry go round, He notices that her face was beat red on this ride as they were sitting together and really close, he realizes that she is forcing herself to do all this. The ride starts moving and he is like hey this could actually be fun when BOOM the air flow lifts Sumis skirt up and she has to catch it, Kazuya starts spitting out water which i don’t know where that came from and he’s like THIGHS!!! They take a picture by one of the fish tanks with a stuffed dolphin, go see the jellyfish hall, have coffee, essentially a typical but fun aquarium date. Kazuya points out how this itinerary is too strict, Sumi isn’t giving each activity time to breath it’s just one after another. They wind up in the underwater Tunnel Kazuya sees a sawfish and he completely nerds out and starts spitting facts out about the fish. He catches himself Thinking how cringe that must have been to Sumi but she actually liked it! He mentions how she might actually wind up being a natural at this job, the rental girlfriend thing. And I have to slightly agree to an extent. Sure her communication skills need a lot of work, but when it comes down to the actual date she really did plan out a perfect one for Kazuya, I think she realized this as he started to blurt out facts about the fish. That could be her special skill in the rental business making sure the date she goes on with the renter is super catered to what they like, versus just going do something like bowling and dinner.
Finally they get to the area where the Dolphin show happens. He mentions how he has always wanted to go there. Sumi lights up hearing this. Kazuya notices a sign that says the show was at 11:30 which is what Chizuru must have meant when she said he could not miss 11:30 Kazuya takes a seat while Sumi went off to get them drinks, she comes back and taps him on the shoulder and notions that they should move up a few seats. At first he is confused, but then she points to some water on those seats letting him know that whoever sits there always gets wet from the dolphins splashing. It’s right here that he asks himself if Sumi came here in advance to check all this out. The show starts and Kazuya is freaking out having a super good time. Sumi is just looking at Kazuya with watery eyes and her heart beating super hard. At the end of the show it was time for the dolphin to splash the front row crowd and it starts doing its thing, all the kids are having a great time. But turns out one of the dolphins was feeling extra good that day and would wind up splashing all the way up to Kazuya and Sumi drenching them with water.
Kazuya looks over at Sumi and she gets wetter than he did and he notices that the school girl uniform at this point was basically see through because he could see her bra. He quickly rips his button down shirt off and hands it to her. In his head he is like I saw nothing I saw nothing. Then we hear Sumi apologize… Kazuya realizes that she is apologizing because she must feel like she has failed as his guide for the day. So to make her feel better and I suppose because he was also just having a great time he starts laughing and says this is what makes dolphin shows so great. He even pays her a compliment by saying she is super cute and how she is the best guide just based on how much fun he is having. Kazuya goes to walk off to see if there is a shirt and or towel he can buy to dry them off and we slightly hear Sumi say “Crushing on you” He stops and he’s like what? She freezes a little bit and says we… We’re crushing it. He’s like oh we are on track with the schedule to which she is like yeah. Good save Sumi. We all know she was trying to tell him that she is crushing on him. We can come to this conclusion because as he starts to walk off they show Sumi with her heart beating faster than ever. They get changed into some shirts that they found at the gift shop, and Kazuya is like at least this look isn’t see through anymore. After the aquarium they wind up at a spot by this bridge in the city, a real romantic setting, they sit down and at first there is a massive gap between them. Kazuya is thinking about the date and how perfectly planned out it was. He questions if this was all just professionalism or was it this perfect because of other reasons. Because why go that far just for a rental date. He realizes that the area they are sitting at currently at night was fueled by Horny Couples” as we see one couple saying it was time to head back to the hotel and how they should pick up some strong booze on the way there.
She slowly starts to scoot closer to him! He notices right away and is like what is goin on! She says his name and he’s like what you wanna leave? She shakes her head no. He notices that she is in a panic and she is blushing super hard at this point. Next thing you know she makes a quick sudden movement towards him and I thought she was just going in for the kiss, He screams and then we see her head down, arms in the air holding a gift out for Kazuya.
She says Happy birthday, he opens it and it’s a super cool beanie with a little fish on it! He realizes that she remembered when his birthday was from when she had asked some time ago, then he realized that today was more than just a rental date it was a way to celebrate his birthday with him and also get some practice in. The entire day was a gift, not just the hat. He realizes how far Sumi has come compared to the last time where she literally didn’t say a single word, then he thinks back to Ruka saying how she has come so far and Chizuru also making advances in her life and thinks to himself how he is the only one still stuck in place. Sumi sees this and asks if something is wrong, off her phone in text of course and he is a little hesitant at first, so he tells her but in a way that does not out anyone. However I think at the end of it she knew who he was talking about. She puts her hand over his and says please talk to me, it’s my turn to play the role of the wall. So he tells her the story of Chizuru and how her grandma is sick, and might go soon and how she has no family after that. He says how it must be so sad for her yet she continues to put on such a strong face. He then kind of gushes about her and says how she has always been a good friend and has always helped both him and his family out even in her lowest point. (remember he has not said Chizurus name just refers to her as his friend) He tells Sumi about her dream of wanting to be on the big screen and share that moment with her grandma before she goes just basically the entire story that we have learned of Chizuru this season is what he tells Sumi, at the end of it all he is crying and catches himself, but then notices that this story has Sumi crying also! She says she knows how he feels, And tells him to not carry all that weight alone. She says how she is there for him. If she can be like that on every rental date she will be unstoppable. But I think she was that way for this particular person because it was Kazuya and she likes him. They cry together for a while, all the while she was still holding his hand. But he notes that she wasn’t holding his hand like someone would on a date; she was holding it more like in a way to tell him one did not need to be family to share in the pain.
After all this they get to the train station and Kazuya looks like shit from crying so much, he thanks Sumi and says how he didn’t realize talking about it could lighten the load so much, he says how she was the best guide he could have hoped for. She says bye and walks off, then he says that he needs to get his act together, and notices an ad for a crowd funded movie. He says it’s important to rely on others and then says that’s it! I think I’ve found it! What I can do for Chizuru.
For the next episode stuff we see Chizuru walking with someone that is not Kazuya and holding his hand. Then we see her watching a movie at the movies and starting to tear up. I think Kazuya somehow got her into the crowd funded movie so her grandma could finally see her on the big screen. The next episode is called Girlfriend and me. And it is confirmed that it is the last episode.
