Saint Seiya’s New Spin-off Manga To Start Serializing From September

Akita Shoten’s Champion Red magazine revealed on Aug 19, 2022, that Masami Kurumada’s Saint Seiya manga will be getting a spin-off by author Tsunaki Suda, which will start serializing in the magazine from its next issue releasing on Sep 16, 2022.

The spin-off manga is titled Saint Seiya: Kaio Saiki – Rerise of Poseidon.

The plot follows Poseidon, the emperor of the sea, who awakens when a new threat arises during the battle between Athena’s warriors and Hades.

Saint Seiya: Kaio Saiki – Rerise of Poseidon will be the fifth spin-off manga the series gets. The previously released spinoffs include, Saint Seiya Episode.G by Megumu Okada (2002-2013), Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas by Shiori Teshirogi (2006-2013), Saint Seiya: Saintia Shō by Chimaki Kuori (2013-2021) and Saint Seiya: Meiō Iden – Dark Wing by Kenji Saito and Shinsu Ueda (2020- ).

All the spin-off manga were serialized in Akita Shoten’s Champion Red magazine.

Written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada, Saint Seiya was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from Jan 1, 1986, to Nov 19, 1990. The last chapter was published in the first issue of V Jump on Dec 12, 1990. The chapters of the manga have been collected into twenty-eight tankobon volumes.

The story follows five mystical warriors called the Saints who fight wearing sacred sets of armor named “Cloths”, the designs of which derive from the various constellations the characters have adopted as their destined guardian symbols, and empowered by a mystical energy called “Cosmo”. The Saints have sworn to defend the reincarnation of the Greek goddess Athena in her battle against other Olympian gods who want to dominate Earth.

Viz Media has licensed the manga for its English release in North America.

The manga was adapted by Toei Animation into a 114-episode anime television series which was broadcast on TV Asahi from 1986 to 1989. Saint Seiya was later continued with three original video animations released from 2002 to 2008. Four animated feature films premiered in Japanese theaters from 1987 to 1989, with a fifth in 2004 and a sixth in 2014.

A live-action film adaptation will be released in 2023.

A sequel to the manga, titled Saint Seiya: Next Dimension, began serializing in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shonen Champion from 2006.
