ASIFA-Hollywood, an organization of Hollywood animators, announced the nominations for the Annie Awards 2024, awards for the best in the world of animation. For this new edition of the aforementioned award, The film Suzume, as well as El Niño y el Garza, received a total of seven nominations, including Best Picture..

In terms of number of nominations, both Makoto Shinkai’s latest film and Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film were tied, just behind the film Nimona. The animated feature film distributed by Netflix and directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane received a surprising nine nominations. It is worth mentioning that the successful animated film from Sony Pictures animation in collaboration with Marvel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, also obtained seven nominations as did the 2 anime films already mentioned.

These are the awards you aspire to Suzume:

  • Best film
  • Best Effects – Feature Film | Yoshitaka Takeuchi, Hiroyuki Seshita
  • Best Character Animation – Feature Film | Kenichi Tsuchiya
  • Best Music – Feature Film | Kazuma Jinnouchi, Radwimps
  • Best Storyboard – Feature Film | Makoto Shinkai
  • Best Voice Acting – Feature Film | Hokuto Matsumura (Character: Souta Munakata)
  • Best Screenplay – Feature Film | Makoto Shinkai

The nominations for The Boy and the Heron include:

  • Best film
  • Best Character Animation – Feature Film | Takeshi Honda
  • Best Direction – Feature Film | Hayao Miyazaki
  • Best Music – Feature Film | Joe Hisaishi
  • Best Production Design – Feature Film | Yoji Takeshige
  • Best Storyboard – Feature Film | Hayao Miyazaki
  • Best Screenplay – Feature Film | Hayao Miyazaki

It is always refreshing to read the list of nominations for the Annies, because unlike the vast majority of awards that disqualify animation as something “for children”, here the love for art is evident and the aim is to reward quality and technical innovation. Not everything is perfect, because if the Annies have one defect, it is that they tend to discriminate against international animated films, particularly those from Asia. This fortunately changed this year but not completely.

We’ll find out who wins when the 51st Annie Awards take place starting at 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
