The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the extensive list of films eligible for nomination in the Best Picture category for the upcoming 2024 Oscars. Among the 265 eligible films, two anime films have made the cut, namely Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume No Tojimari.

On top of that, Joe Hisashi has also been shortlisted for the Music (Original Score) category for The Boy And The Heron.

It’s important to note that this announcement is not a shortlist nor a nomination, but a recognition of eligibility for consideration.

In addition to their potential for Best Picture nomination, both The Boy And The Heron and Suzume are also eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature category, where they’ll be competing against 33 other films.

The anime films that are eligible for the Animated Feature category includes:

  • Blue Giant
  • The Boy and the Heron
  • The First Slam Dunk
  • Lonely Castle in the Mirror
  • Suzume

The final nominees for the Oscars will be revealed by the Academy on Jan 23, 2024, with the awards ceremony scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024.

The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit for the film industry. They are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.
