Hayao Miyzazaki’s The Boy and the Heron won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, only the second anime to do so.

Having won what is widely seen as the biggest award for an animated film, it is one of a string of accolades the film has picked up, having also won a Golden Globe and becoming the first anime to win a BAFTA.

Miyazaki first won an Oscar in the 2003 ceremony with Spirited Away. This means that Studio Ghibli is now joint-third in terms of Oscar studio wins with DreamWorks, who won awards with both Shrek and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Only Pixar and Walt Disney have won more Oscars.

It wasn’t the only Japanese film to win an Oscar last night, with live-action movie Godzilla Minus One winning the prize for “Best Visual Effects”.

The ceremony was dominated by Oppenheimer, which won seven awards including “Best Picture”, and Poor Things which won four.
