Hokusai Manga Exhibition To Run For Two Weeks In Kolkata

To commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relationship between India and Japan, the Japanese Consulate in Kolkata and HIDCO are holding a two week exhibition titled Manga Hokusai Manga: Approaching the Master’s Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics; at Nazrul Tirtha, New Town, Kolkata.

The exhibition was inaugurated on Nov 11, 2022 by Indian artist Subhaprasanna Bhattacharjee. The exhibition revolves around the works of Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese artist of the Edo period.

Fifteen volumes of Hokusai’s works, about 4000 images collected in about 800 pages, commonly known as Hokusai manga, were on display. The first volume of the paintings was published in 1814.

According to Japanese Consul General Koichi Nakagawa, who attended the exhibition, manga is used for representing both cartoon and comics in Japan, and that its roots can be traced back to as far as the 12th century.

Along with Nakagawa, HIDCO Managing director Debasish Sen, and vice-consul Risa Tamura were also in attendance.

The exhibition will open for visitors till Nov 28, 2022.

Manga Hokusai Manga exhibition was also hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Chennai on October. The exhibition also featured works from contemporary artists including Ichikawa Haruko, Igarashi Daisuke, Kyo Machiko, Nishijima Daisuke and others.
