Suzume No Tojimari Earns 11.3 Billion Yen, Becomes 30th Highest Grossing Movie In Japan

The famous director Makoto Shinkai returned after 3 years of break with his self penned and directed Suzume No Tojimari movie and it has earned 11.3 billion yen at the Japanese box office.

The movie has mobilized 8.51 million people until now and has become the 30th highest earning movie at the Japanese box office.

The movie is stuck between Star Wars: The Force Awakens at 29th position and Antarctica at 31st position.

Suzume no Tojimari released in Japan on Nov 11, 2022. The movie was also released in Dolby Cinema technology in 6 theatres across Japan.

The movie goers from December 24 were gifted a new spin-off novel written by Makoto Shinkai. The novel will be focusing on Suzume’s aunt Tamaki and will be named Suzume no Tojimari ~Tamaki-san no Monogatari~.

Shinkai wrote the novel’s story after the movie was completed. Only 150,000 copies of the novel will be available for distribution.

Makoto Shinkai also left comments about the novel. He said that every character in the movie has past which cannot be showcased in a single 2 hour movie. Hence he is writing a novel focusing first on Suzume’s aunt Tamaki and her feelings while raising Suzume.

Crunchyroll had earlier revealed the world-wide release dates of the movie. It will release in United States, Canada and United Kingdom on April 14, 2023.

They will be announcing new release dates for other European countries along with Middle East, Latin America, and Africa region.

The distribution of the movie in North America will be handled by Crunchyroll alone whereas Sony & Crunchyroll will handle the distribution of the movie together in Latin and South America, Australia, New Zealand, The Middle East, Africa and certain countries of Europe.

Wild Bunch International and Eurozoom will release the movie in French and German speaking Europe.

The movie sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more than Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi no Nawa/Your Name (which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million at the time)), comparing the earnings of the first 3 days of both the movies. It also sold 14.8% more tickets and earned 14.4% more than Shinkai’s Weathering With You, making Tojimari the highest opening 3 days of Shinkai movies.

RADWIMPS and Kazuma Jinnouchi composed the music for film, with Tik tok famed Toaka performing the theme song, “Suzume”.

Suzume No Tojimari film’s soundtrack comprises of two theme songs, “Kanata Haruka” and “Suzume,” twenty five additional songs and a brand new song created during the film’s production by Yojiro Noda, called “Tamaki”. RADWIMPS also released the official music video for KANATA HALUKA.

The officially announced story of Suzume no Tojimari is described as:

Suzume is a 17-year-old, who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu. One day, she meets a traveling young man who is looking for a “door.” Suzume decides to follow him and discovers an old door in the ruins in the mountains. As if drawn by something, Suzume reaches out for the door… What follows is Suzume’s liberation and growth as she closes the “doors” that cause misfortune in abandoned places around Japan.
