‘Watched It Four Times Already’ – Toyotaro Talks About His Love For Latest Dragon Ball Super Movie

August 2, 2022

Dragon Ball Super author Toyotaro talked about his love of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie in a recent interview, revealing that he has watched it four times already.

Taking part in a special broadcast being carried out to celebrate the release of the 19th volume of Dragon Ball Super manga, Toyotaro said that everything in the movie, from animation to the music, was executed so well that it stuck a chord with him and left him inspired.

“Yes, I have gone four times now,” Toyotaro said. “Honestly everything. From the start to end, I loved everything. Everything about it from Toei’s animation work to its charm and also the sound. Everything is so high quality, it really stuck a chord. It’s just so fun and really inspired me.”

Along with the animation and charm, the movie’s story and its humor was also something that left Toyotaro pretty impressed.

The author acknowledged the difficulties of being able to properly translate gag scenes from a manga to the screen, praising the work done by Toei and director Tetsuro Kodama in doing so perfectly. He believed that the staff really understood what Toriyama wanted to portray.

“The director really understood how Toriyama’s jokes worked and Toei animation seemed like they wanted to make them as funny as possible. Perfect co-ordination,” Toyotaro said.

“I think it must be difficult…Even if its the same line and same type of frame, when it’s animated, sometimes it isn’t funny. So I think everyone worked to represent the gags in a way that would be funny in the movie. They were really in sync with each other,” he added.

However, despite all of these positives, what Toyotaro loved most about the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie was how much he was able to learn from it.

Every time he watched the movie, Toyotaro hoped to understand and learn how Toriyama thinks and how he writes a story.

“I have had a lot of interactions with Toriyama, so I find myself searching for and taking in his ideas, his story telling, and so on each time I watch it. I keep watching it, hoping to learn even a little more about how he thinks and tells a story,” Toyotaro said.

The author then admitted that he still has a long way to go before he would be able to write like the veteran mangaka.

“I feel like I have a lot to learn if I want to be able to write jokes like that. So I guess my favorite part of the movie is how much I have learned from it,” he said.
